Ponto de Encontro, Quinta-Feira, 7h45min, Almada.
Tinha combinado anteriormente com dois amigos meus para me acompanharem e ajudarem neste ensaio muito especial, pelo que nos encontrámos em Almada para seguirmos juntos para o número 108 da Av. Miguel Bombarda. Felizmente, o trânsito não nos dificultou a viagem pelo que chegámos bem antes da hora programada. Lá fomos "queimar" tempo, primeiro, babámos a vitrine do stand a apreciar o 275S que eu iria levar, depois tomámos um café... E visitámos o stand da Aston Martin que estava ali ao virar da esquina, coisa perfeitamente normal para quem gosta de carros, não é? Se bem que, aquando dessa visita, o que realmente me chamou à atenção foi o aspecto de um Peugeot 106 GTI que ali estava estacionado, de origem! Admito, sou incorrigível, adoro estes pequenos diabretes e viro um puto autêntico quando os vejo! Bem, já estava quase na hora, voltámos ao stand, e os meus amigos seguiram para o ponto de encontro, no Autódromo do Estoril.
Eis que chega o "mentor" deste stand e um dos principais motivadores para a presença da Morgan e da Caterham em Portugal, o Sr. Jorge Monteiro. Já passou quase um ano desde a última vez que falámos e que tinha culminado numa manhã muito engraçada, ao volante de um Morgan 3 Wheeler, uma das experiências mais inesquecíveis que alguma vez tive... A par do Caterham 275S que fui buscar naquele momento. Metemos a conversa em dia e fizemos um pequeno briefing sobre o Caterham, até que chegou ao momento de entrar no carro para seguir o meu caminho... Não sou acrobata, mas acreditem, senti-me como um! Perna direita lá para dentro, sentar-me na consola central, apoiar-me no rollbar, perna esquerda lá para dentro, deixar deslizar para dentro e... Que posição de condução perfeita! Ok, quase perfeita, só um pequeno ajuste para afastar o banco... Agora sim, perfeita! E estranha, o volante Momo, que vem neste pack S, é realmente muito pequeno, "veremos como se porta na condução", pensei eu. Estava muito bem sentado, com uma envolvência muito boa por parte do banco, os apoios de braço à altura adequada e toda a instrumentação visível... Pena que não possa dizer o mesmo da ventilação, que só descobri quando reparei no botão dedicado... E olhei lá para baixo, no habitáculo. Engraçado o tablier, não existem manetes mas sim interruptores, muitos. Um para o limpa vidros, outro para os piscas (que tinha um som algo irritante quando os accionávamos, mas é compreensível, dado o sistema utilizado e o som emanado do escape), outro para o desembaciador, outro para as luzes, a buzina era um botão preto, situado do lado esquerdo e um botão START, vermelho, ali do lado direito. Carreguei logo nesse e o Caterham ganhou vida! Lá abandonei o Stand, com muito cuidado para que o 275S não raspasse por baixo, e segui para o Estoril.
As primeiras impressões.
Mal saí do stand, deparei-me com um ambiente muito idêntico ao de quando saí com o 3 Wheeler. O Efeito "neck breaker". Perfeitamente normal, não é? Afinal, o cocktail Caterham, pintura verde com lista amarela e um ruído de motor nada social passa perfeitamente despercebido na via pública, claramente! Mas vamos lá desligar do mundo lá fora e falar dos primeiros minutos de condução. A embraiagem tem um curso e peso ideais, o acelerador revelou-se bastante directo e bem afinado, a direcção, apesar de não assistida, tem o peso ideal, sendo directa e precisa, sendo que, num instante, esqueci o tamanho do volante que tanto critiquei no início! A travagem, devido à falta de um servofreio, revelou-se bastante dura, mas foi uma questão de hábito. Quando dei por mim, estava a chegar à Praça de Espanha e já perfeitamente habituado a este Caterham! Quer dizer... Mais ou menos, ainda hoje me causa confusão olhar para o lado e ver... O puxador da porta do carro que parou a meu lado. Que posição de condução muito baixa, a ver-se o longo capot deste chassis SV. ADORO.
Tinha decido apanhar a A5 e ir por aí direito ao Autódromo do Estoril, para o ponto de encontro da sessão fotográfica, mas... Ups! Virei "POR ENGANO" para Monsanto... Bem, que sacrifício, aproveitei para perceber como se porta a travagem, motor e caixa, e chassis em ritmos... Mais vivos, digamos. Um autêntico martírio, fiquei profundamente chateado por me "enganar" no caminho... A resposta do motor, quer em baixo ou médio regime, é soberba, fazendo com que este Caterham saia disparado da curva assim como permite obter uma progressão de velocidade bastante rápida em "esses". A travagem, parece apenas funcionar a 100% quando adopto um ritmo mais vivo, não se notando o peso do pedal, que já tinha referido, e também apercebi-me de um (muito) bom equilíbrio, sem qualquer descompensação, mesmo provocando este diabrete. A caixa, é deliciosa, colocada no sítio correcto, a pouca distância do volante, tem um tacto mecânico muito agradável e o seu curso é bastante curto, sendo, também, bastante precisa e muito bem escalonada para este motor, notando-se uma aposta na resposta e aceleração, do que propriamente em velocidade de ponta. E isso agrada-me, imenso. O chassis, aliado à direcção precisa e directa, permite uma entrada em curva bastante incisiva, mantendo um comportamento neutro à medida que percorro o apex da curva, permitindo controlar com bastante facilidade alguma sobreviragem que aconteça, provocada ou não, mantendo este 275S sempre dentro daquela que penso ser a linha ideal para descrever a curva. A isto tudo, alio o som delicioso deste 1.6L SIGMA, da Ford e, nesse momento, comecei a entender a real fórmula do Sr. Colin Chapman, "Simplify, then add Lightness". Não nos podemos esquecer, são apenas 140cv... Para cerca de 540kg! Acima de tudo, toda esta descrição leva a uma única palavra: "diversão". É o que obtemos com as coisas mais simples que a vida nos oferece, e tal acontece aqui, com um "simples" automóvel. Não há ajudas electrónicas para tracção ou estabilidade, não há ABS, não há airbags, tudo manual, puro e duro! Este bocado no Monsanto foi um bom augúrio para o resto do dia...
Entrei na A5 e segui rumo ao Estoril, já que ainda gostaria de ter tempo para dar uma volta pela Lagoa Azul, Guincho e almoçar no Restaurante de um grande amigo meu, com vista privilegiada para este Caterham. Além disso, os meus amigos já estavam à minha espera para darmos início à sessão! A viagem pela A5 foi estranhamente confortável, creio que as portas de lona, do pack S, ajudaram a evitar que houvesse intrusão de ar no habitáculo, e o baixo peso e o (muito) bom escalonamento da caixa permitiram reprisar com bastante rapidez. Mas que fique claro uma coisa, não é esta a praia do Caterham, este carro precisa de estradas nacionais e quanto mais sinuosas... Melhor! A placa a indicar a saída para o Autódromo do Estoril apareceu...
A sessão e os pormenores.
Chegado ao Autódromo dirigi-me para as traseiras das bancadas da recta, para aproveitar a arquitectura como fundo, o túnel das garagens e ainda uns pannings que saíram pela mão do meu bom amigo João Dimas, a quem tenho muito a agradecer a ajuda, mas deixarei isso para o fim! Não foi difícil colocar e encaixar este 275S neste ambiente, dados os tons neutros do fundo e o esquema cromático a lembrar o livery do Lotus 25, vencedor de 14 Grandes Prémios do Campeonato Mundial, nas mãos do lendário Jim Clark. Foi neste momento que começámos a reparar nos pormenores deste Caterham, com mais atenção.
A chave, trabalhada em alumínio, de forma a criar o número 7, alusivo ao Lotus Seven, foi o detalhe que mais gostei e vem com o pack S! Sem dúvida um pormenor inesperado e que até dá um certo gozo de ver. No interior comecei a reparar no nome Caterham gravado nos encostos de cabeça, nos pontos de fixação das portas com colchetes de pressão, portas essas que têm um apoio de braço incorporado, na manete em alumínio, de óptima pega, nos filamentos de desembaciamento do visor dianteiro, entre outros. Passando para o exterior, reparei no tampo de combustível Aero, que vem no pack S, destaca-se no meio do British Racing Green, assim como a roda suplente montada atrás, reparei também nas belíssimas jantes Classic de 14'', que encaixam na perfeição neste conjunto, na linha de escape bem visível do lado do passageiro (e um trauma para este indivíduo, também, não é Dimas?), nos pontos de fixação do capot, que comecei logo a desmontar... O capot é muito, mas muito leve, afinal, é feito de uma folha bem fina de alumínio (lembrem-se que o mote é a redução de peso), peguei nele com a ajuda de um outro amigo e encostámos com muito cuidado aquele capot, afinal, não queríamos nada danificado. O cofre é interessante, tendo imenso espaço para fazer uma manutenção mais profunda. Reparei na bateria Banner, tubagens em silicone, um colector de escape interessante e, tomando mais atenção, pude ver a buzina dupla e o logo "Caterham Motorsport" numa barra de reforço. Na frente, conseguimos ver os triângulos de suspensão, amortecedores e molas, sendo que esta separação torna-se muito engraçada de ver quando estamos a conduzir! É um pequeno carro, sem dúvida, mas neste caso não é o tamanho que importa, e sim o conteúdo, e é precisamente neste ponto que a Caterham ganha imensos pontos.
Depois de conhecer este 275S ao pormenor, o tempo já tinha voado e decidimos seguir para o almoço.
Uma passagem pela Lagoa Azul, Guincho, Cascais e a paragem no Montecarlo.
*Piii* Acendeu a luz da reserva, que chatice! Felizmente existe uma BP em Sintra pelo que segui para lá, com o meu amigo Dimas a pendura. Foi muito giro ver a atenção que os miúdos e graúdos davam ao Caterham, que estava parado na bomba enquanto eu estava na fila para pagar umas litrosas de 98 Ultimate (pode levar 95, mas é aconselhável a 98), afinal, este "menino" precisa de ser bem alimentado, não é? É bom ver que ao fim de 60 anos o Seven continua a chamar à atenção dos amantes de automóveis! Fechado o tampo Aero, seguimos viagem para o Restaurante Montecarlo, cujo dono é um grande amigo meu. A Lagoa Azul aproxima-se...
A entrada na estrada da Lagoa foi calma, mas assim que apareceram as primeiras curvas... Não pude evitar, tinha de explorar o Caterham! Tal como tinha percebido no Monsanto, conduzir este 275S é um regalo para os sentidos, entrar na curva, provocar a traseira, sentir o peso da direcção e travagem, sentir todos os desníveis da estrada... Assim sim, prazer de condução! Mesmo o Dimas, indo a pendura, ia divertidíssimo com a forma como atravessámos a Lagoa Azul direitos ao Guincho, tanto que, indo ele do lado da linha de escape, só exclamava: "Wooooo... Pipocas!!! Parece uma rola, ah, ah, ah!"! E não é que parecia mesmo? Ah, ah, ah! Nunca fiz esta estrada com tanta diversão ao volante como neste dia, sem dúvida!
Foi muito bom, o bocado a ritmos mais vivos na Lagoa Azul, mas chegámos ao Guincho e chegou a hora de acalmar, afinal, não queria gastar todas as litrosas até ao restaurante... E também havia mais movimento. Segurança acima de tudo! Incrível como este carro permite ter os dois lados da moeda, tanto nos diverte ao subir os níveis de adrenalina, como, neste caso, nos dá prazer em simplesmente o conduzir, calmamente. Senti-me bem, ali, bem encaixado no banco, com aquela posição de condução perfeita, a ouvir a rouquidão do motor SIGMA em baixo regime e a usufruir da sua agradável disponibilidade em qualquer regime. Era exactamente isso que íamos a comentar, eu e o Dimas, isso e os constantes olhares fixos no verde e amarelo. Começou novamente o síndrome do mirone. Nada contra, faz parte! Apenas... É esquisito, não estou habituado! Mas fiz algo que não me importei nada em fazer, sempre que via um miúdo a apontar para o Caterham e a chamar à atenção dos pais, uma rápida troca de 5ª para 2ª acontecia e um certo acelerador sentia mais peso... Felicidade estampada nas caras deles... E na minha! Chegámos à marina de Cascais e o síndrome do mirone intensificou, tanto que até o Dimas comentou: "Rodrigo, as pessoas não páram de olhar...", eu já nem ligava, já estava mentalizado desse factor, e parado na passadeira, à espera que os peões passassem, comecei a pensar que até ali sentia-me bem a conduzir, até naquele trânsito na hora de almoço. O Dimas voltou a chamar-me à atenção para um rapaz que ia a atravessar a passadeira, estava a gesticular para dar uma pisadela no acelerador. Bem que sacrifício... Boas acções foram distribuídas ao longo desta viagem para o restaurante Montecarlo! E algumas más, vá, confesso, como um susto que preguei a um motociclista que se atravessou à frente do 275S e deu duas aceleradelas, quando estava parado no semáforo depois do Casino do Estoril... Respondi-lhe com duas aceleradelas também e assustei o pobre coitado... Mas antes que me critiquem, saiu o típico gesto: "Fixe!" da mão do condutor da mota!
Que volta épica e divertida, mas acabou, chegámos ao Restaurante Montecarlo, onde nos encontrámos com outro meu amigo (cujo carro irei fotografar num futuro próximo, por isso, estejam atentos!) que trouxe diversão no nosso regresso ao Estoril, mas isso fica para depois. A nossa mesa na esplanada permitiu-nos degustar um muito bom Lombo ao alhinho, enquanto apreciávamos as linhas intemporais do Caterham, que estava logo ali, ao lado. Impressionante, como um desenho com 60 anos em cima sofreu poucas alterações e ainda hoje nos mantém a sonhar. Impressionante como nos sentimos uns autênticos miúdos na presença de... Um autêntico brinquedo! É mesmo isso, um brinquedo para adultos, que se sentem uns miúdos! Acho que acabei de resumir correctamente este Caterham 275S, não concordam?
O FIM
Foi um rico almoço, deu-nos forças para voltarmos ao Estoril e lá arrancámos, desta vez levei o meu amigo Joel comigo e o Vivas seguiu no seu MX-5, com o Dimas. Chegados ao Guincho, tivemos um momento petrolhead muito giro, com uma caravana de 3 roadsters muito famosos, à minha frente seguia um MG B e atrás vinha o MX-5 do Vivas, cada qual com o seu ronco característico, nunca o Guincho foi tão épico, para mim! O MG B despediu-se de nós no fim da estrada costeira do Guincho e a restante viagem foi relativamente tranquila, com o Vivas a mostrar-se bem entusiasmado ao volante quando passámos a Lagoa Azul... Eu disse relativamente! Chegámos ao Estoril para mais umas rolling shots e mais uma dose de contemplação desta diabrura em forma de automóvel. Que dia que estava a ser, mas tinha chegado a hora de o entregar o Caterham ao stand. Despedi-me do Vivas e enveredei novamente pela A5, desta vez com o Dimas a meu lado, já que o Joel teve de ir buscar o carro dele. Aproveitei que o trânsito ainda se encontrava fluído e meti em mente que queria acabar o dia com mais uma brincadeira. Ora, um automóvel barulhento e um Túnel do Marquês? Só se estraga uma casa... Com algumas aceleradelas pelo meio... A ensurdecerem o trânsito... Nada demais, perfeitamente natural!
Número 108 da Av. Miguel Bombarda à vista, assim chegou ao fim aquele que foi um dos dias mais épicos da minha vida, e uma das experiências de condução mais vivas que alguma vez tive. Queria contar muito mais, mas correria o risco de piorar o que já aconteceu, obter um texto demasiado longo... Penso que me compreendem, afinal, não são todos os dias que temos experiências como esta! O capot é muito, mas muito leve, afinal, é feito de uma folha bem fina de alumínio (lembrem-se que o mote é a redução de peso), peguei nele com a ajuda de um outro amigo e encostámos com muito cuidado aquele capot, afinal, não queríamos nada danificado. O cofre é interessante, tendo imenso espaço para fazer uma manutenção mais profunda. Reparei na bateria Banner, tubagens em silicone, um colector de escape interessante e, tomando mais atenção, pude ver a buzina dupla e o logo "Caterham Motorsport" numa barra de reforço. Na frente, conseguimos ver os triângulos de suspensão, amortecedores e molas, sendo que esta separação torna-se muito engraçada de ver quando estamos a conduzir! É um pequeno carro, sem dúvida, mas neste caso não é o tamanho que importa, e sim o conteúdo, e é precisamente neste ponto que a Caterham ganha imensos pontos.
Depois de conhecer este 275S ao pormenor, o tempo já tinha voado e decidimos seguir para o almoço.
Uma passagem pela Lagoa Azul, Guincho, Cascais e a paragem no Montecarlo.
*Piii* Acendeu a luz da reserva, que chatice! Felizmente existe uma BP em Sintra pelo que segui para lá, com o meu amigo Dimas a pendura. Foi muito giro ver a atenção que os miúdos e graúdos davam ao Caterham, que estava parado na bomba enquanto eu estava na fila para pagar umas litrosas de 98 Ultimate (pode levar 95, mas é aconselhável a 98), afinal, este "menino" precisa de ser bem alimentado, não é? É bom ver que ao fim de 60 anos o Seven continua a chamar à atenção dos amantes de automóveis! Fechado o tampo Aero, seguimos viagem para o Restaurante Montecarlo, cujo dono é um grande amigo meu. A Lagoa Azul aproxima-se...
A entrada na estrada da Lagoa foi calma, mas assim que apareceram as primeiras curvas... Não pude evitar, tinha de explorar o Caterham! Tal como tinha percebido no Monsanto, conduzir este 275S é um regalo para os sentidos, entrar na curva, provocar a traseira, sentir o peso da direcção e travagem, sentir todos os desníveis da estrada... Assim sim, prazer de condução! Mesmo o Dimas, indo a pendura, ia divertidíssimo com a forma como atravessámos a Lagoa Azul direitos ao Guincho, tanto que, indo ele do lado da linha de escape, só exclamava: "Wooooo... Pipocas!!! Parece uma rola, ah, ah, ah!"! E não é que parecia mesmo? Ah, ah, ah! Nunca fiz esta estrada com tanta diversão ao volante como neste dia, sem dúvida!
Foi muito bom, o bocado a ritmos mais vivos na Lagoa Azul, mas chegámos ao Guincho e chegou a hora de acalmar, afinal, não queria gastar todas as litrosas até ao restaurante... E também havia mais movimento. Segurança acima de tudo! Incrível como este carro permite ter os dois lados da moeda, tanto nos diverte ao subir os níveis de adrenalina, como, neste caso, nos dá prazer em simplesmente o conduzir, calmamente. Senti-me bem, ali, bem encaixado no banco, com aquela posição de condução perfeita, a ouvir a rouquidão do motor SIGMA em baixo regime e a usufruir da sua agradável disponibilidade em qualquer regime. Era exactamente isso que íamos a comentar, eu e o Dimas, isso e os constantes olhares fixos no verde e amarelo. Começou novamente o síndrome do mirone. Nada contra, faz parte! Apenas... É esquisito, não estou habituado! Mas fiz algo que não me importei nada em fazer, sempre que via um miúdo a apontar para o Caterham e a chamar à atenção dos pais, uma rápida troca de 5ª para 2ª acontecia e um certo acelerador sentia mais peso... Felicidade estampada nas caras deles... E na minha! Chegámos à marina de Cascais e o síndrome do mirone intensificou, tanto que até o Dimas comentou: "Rodrigo, as pessoas não páram de olhar...", eu já nem ligava, já estava mentalizado desse factor, e parado na passadeira, à espera que os peões passassem, comecei a pensar que até ali sentia-me bem a conduzir, até naquele trânsito na hora de almoço. O Dimas voltou a chamar-me à atenção para um rapaz que ia a atravessar a passadeira, estava a gesticular para dar uma pisadela no acelerador. Bem que sacrifício... Boas acções foram distribuídas ao longo desta viagem para o restaurante Montecarlo! E algumas más, vá, confesso, como um susto que preguei a um motociclista que se atravessou à frente do 275S e deu duas aceleradelas, quando estava parado no semáforo depois do Casino do Estoril... Respondi-lhe com duas aceleradelas também e assustei o pobre coitado... Mas antes que me critiquem, saiu o típico gesto: "Fixe!" da mão do condutor da mota!
Que volta épica e divertida, mas acabou, chegámos ao Restaurante Montecarlo, onde nos encontrámos com outro meu amigo (cujo carro irei fotografar num futuro próximo, por isso, estejam atentos!) que trouxe diversão no nosso regresso ao Estoril, mas isso fica para depois. A nossa mesa na esplanada permitiu-nos degustar um muito bom Lombo ao alhinho, enquanto apreciávamos as linhas intemporais do Caterham, que estava logo ali, ao lado. Impressionante, como um desenho com 60 anos em cima sofreu poucas alterações e ainda hoje nos mantém a sonhar. Impressionante como nos sentimos uns autênticos miúdos na presença de... Um autêntico brinquedo! É mesmo isso, um brinquedo para adultos, que se sentem uns miúdos! Acho que acabei de resumir correctamente este Caterham 275S, não concordam?
O FIM
Foi um rico almoço, deu-nos forças para voltarmos ao Estoril e lá arrancámos, desta vez levei o meu amigo Joel comigo e o Vivas seguiu no seu MX-5, com o Dimas. Chegados ao Guincho, tivemos um momento petrolhead muito giro, com uma caravana de 3 roadsters muito famosos, à minha frente seguia um MG B e atrás vinha o MX-5 do Vivas, cada qual com o seu ronco característico, nunca o Guincho foi tão épico, para mim! O MG B despediu-se de nós no fim da estrada costeira do Guincho e a restante viagem foi relativamente tranquila, com o Vivas a mostrar-se bem entusiasmado ao volante quando passámos a Lagoa Azul... Eu disse relativamente! Chegámos ao Estoril para mais umas rolling shots e mais uma dose de contemplação desta diabrura em forma de automóvel. Que dia que estava a ser, mas tinha chegado a hora de o entregar o Caterham ao stand. Despedi-me do Vivas e enveredei novamente pela A5, desta vez com o Dimas a meu lado, já que o Joel teve de ir buscar o carro dele. Aproveitei que o trânsito ainda se encontrava fluído e meti em mente que queria acabar o dia com mais uma brincadeira. Ora, um automóvel barulhento e um Túnel do Marquês? Só se estraga uma casa... Com algumas aceleradelas pelo meio... A ensurdecerem o trânsito... Nada demais, perfeitamente natural!
Número 108 da Av. Miguel Bombarda à vista, assim chegou ao fim aquele que foi um dos dias mais épicos da minha vida, e uma das experiências de condução mais vivas que alguma vez tive. Queria contar muito mais, mas correria o risco de piorar o que já aconteceu, obter um texto demasiado longo... Penso que me compreendem, afinal, não são todos os dias que temos experiências como esta!
